Phreaking is the art of hacking phone lines, usually to get free calls. Since
phone systems around the nation and world have changed much since these documents
have been written, many of them describe methods that will not work. The advent of
ESS has made it difficult, if not impossible, to use things such as blue boxes to make
free calls. Remember that building any device to get free phone service, even if you do not use it,
is a crime. In my opinion phreaking is no different than stealing, however learning about
the way phone systems work is interesting. Like any field of hacking, it's the knowledge
that is important. If you're arrested it's your fault. Don't play with this stuff, just understand
why it works. The phone company can tell if you're messing with tones on
your lines or if your line voltage is changing improperly. All knowledge comes with responsibility.
